February 21st - Something Fishy...

These are cirrocumulus clouds. When the clouds in the sky look like this picture, it is called a "mackerel sky" because the clouds look like the scales on a mackerel fish.

January 20th - Cirrocumulus Shuttle

This cirrocumulus floccus formation resembles a giant Space Shuttle taking off at sunset.

January 6th - Cirrocumulus Ghost Skull

Just the ghost of a skull appears in this cold winter sky - one of those visions that comes to you if you squint slightly  at this cirrocumulus floccus cloudscape.

January 1st - Grandma and Grandpa Cumulus

Grandma and Grandpa Cumulus look upward to admire the cirrocumulus floccus tufts in a bright blue sky...

These clouds formed a pattern that seemed similar to the water spray off my daughter's hair when she whipped her head back in the pool. Boy does that take me back!

Today is Thanksgiving, and I am thankful for memories like these, and the clouds that evoke them!

November 5th - Giant Thumbprint in the Sky

The base ridge of cumulus clouds cast a crown shaped shadow on the layer of Cirrocumulus floccus clouds above it - way cool!

The whole thing looks like a giant thumbprint in the sky!

November 2nd - Splash!

The sky looked like a huge rock was being dropped into the sky making a big splash!

October 22nd - Cirrocumulus Popcorn

Cirrocumulus popcorn filled the sky in Tysons Corner! I have to admit these were fun clouds, and it was a beautiful day for a wedding rehearsal.

October 5th - Skycloud-Pool Ripples

This expanse of cirrocumulus floccus made silvery by the setting sun looked to me like someone had dropped a stone into the skycloud-pool which caused a wonderful rippling effect.

September 13th - Sea Foam, Surfers, and Seasick

These photos are of a variety of cirrocumulous clouds. Cirrocumuli are high-level clouds appearing as a formation of small masses of white or pale blue, fleecy clouds in a globular, wavelike, rippled pattern, usually in regularly arranged groupings. Cirrocumulus are composed of highly supercooled water droplets, ice crystals, or a mixture of both. Instead of looking up, I see aerial views today. This formation of Cirrocumulus undulatus looks amazingly like the sea foam left on the beach after a wave recedes.


Looking down, I see waves breaking at a distance from the shore (Cirrocumulus lacunosus), but no matter how hard I squint I still can only imagine the surfers riding them.


These white caps (Cirrocumulus floccus) would make for a bumpy ride back to shore!
