October 30th - Whale Tail, Wind or Water?

These storm clouds reflected the mood of the day - gray. They evoked the feeling of being pulled forward or moving forward somehow like following a whale in the ocean or a bird in the sky. I also saw the opposite - water rushing out of a tunnel or a big mouth blowing out the wind...

October 29th - Cumulus Cottonball Cloudscape

These beautiful, mid-level cumulus clouds are like a giant pile of cotton balls. They look wonderful against a sky that is an incredible shade of blue.

October 28th - Window in the sky

The way these accessory clouds spiral up to the cumulus clouds above creates a window it would be fun to fly through!

October 27th -Black and White Sky Biscuit

The flat bottoms on these cumulus storm clouds remind me of the wonderful shortcake biscuits Chris makes when strawberries are in season.

October 26th - Braided Brush Fire Cumulonimbus Cloud

This cumulonimbus cloud looks like it's braided as it grows out of the ground. It has the look of rising smoke from a brush fire.

October 23rd - French Poodle on his Laptop

Okay - the foliage in DC is really beautiful, and there are rolling hills and farm country...so what do they need fantastic clouds for? So I'm pulling a Florida sky for this slot from an archive file because I just couldn't find suitable competition here.

I was fortunate to capture a cumulus cloudscape on the very edge where blue skies are quickly being overtaken. And at the bottom right a French Poodle works on his laptop...

October 22nd - Cirrocumulus Popcorn

Cirrocumulus popcorn filled the sky in Tysons Corner! I have to admit these were fun clouds, and it was a beautiful day for a wedding rehearsal.

October 21st -Color is great but Clouds are better

The Sunset at Charleston Harbor was all about the colors, but not a cloud in sight. Kind of hard to imagine anything but a beautiful sunset...

October 20th -Twilight in South Carolina

We're on the road for a few days visiting our kids in DC with a few stops along the way. I was torn between using photos I have on file from other days in my yard, or posting skies from where we are. I decided on the later, so here's a beauty from Charleston, SC. What a beautiful city!

October 19th - Rembrandt in the Sky

This unusual palate of colors was very dramatic and Dutch Painterly.

This cumulonimbus cloudscape caught brightly lit highlights and brooding darker tones making for quite an interesting composition.

October 18th - Mountain Range Reflection

It always amazes me how cloudscapes can look so much like other things.

This formation could have easily been a mountain scene reflected in a lake!

October 17th - Zorro and the Alligator

These beautiful, mid-level cumulus clouds are whipped up by the cold front coming through. They look wonderful against a sky that is an incredible shade of blue.

Like the mouth of a giant alligator, these clouds look like they will eat the entire sky.

Zorro took to the sky and carved a huge "Z" with clouds!

October 16th - Cumulus Inferno

The sky was definitely on fire tonight - Dante would have been proud!

October 15th -Beyond Atomic Explosion or Extraterrestrials

This cumulonimbus cloud formation, dramatically offset by the colors of the setting sun behind me created this unbelievable tower of clouds. Likening it to a UFO or an atomic mushroom cloud would be an understatement at best.

October 14th -Cumulus Puffs on Cirrus Grass

These 2 little cumulus puffs looked like they were running and playing on this patch of cirrus grass.

October 13th -Altocumulus Crab Claw

Today the spiraling effect of these pink fractocumulus clouds was amazing. It looked like a giant crab with one claw reaching down. This type of cloud looks like unorganized and unstructured puffs of cumulus cloud.

October 10th -Riot in the Sky!

These Cirrus clouds make a really crazy background for the lower level cumulus clouds. It looks like there's a riot going on!

Friday, October 9, 2009

October 9th - cumulonimbus Santa Claus

This cumulonimbus cloud towering up in the sky has a giant mustache and curly white hair - Santa Claus perhaps...

Thursday, October 8, 2009

October 8th - Angel Wing Sunset

The top half of this cumulus formation looked like the wing of an angel on top of the glow of sunset.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

October 7th - Power Plant Plume

There is a power plant about 5 miles from my house, and I can see the plume from the cooling stack. It is pretty impressive for a man-made cloud. I wonder what's in it - it's beautiful but a little disturbing...

October 6th - Disney's Goofy and a Heart

I really like hearts - I know it's girly-girl, but I do. So when I saw this cumulus cloud valentine I just had to take the shot.

This was SO the Disney character Goofy. I admit that by the time I got the camera in focus the air current had obscured the image a bit, but I can still see him!

October 5th - Skycloud-Pool Ripples

This expanse of cirrocumulus floccus made silvery by the setting sun looked to me like someone had dropped a stone into the skycloud-pool which caused a wonderful rippling effect.

Sunday, October 4, 2009

October 4th - Geyser in the Wind

This cumulus cloud formation looked like a geyser coming out of the ground and being swept away by the wind.

It was made even more beautiful by the subtlety of the near-sunset lighting.

October 3rd - Howl at the Moon!

Sometimes it's good when there are no clouds - then you can see cool other stuff.

I've been wondering all day why I felt like howling... now I know!

October 1st - Fist and Cap

This amazing cumulonimbus cloud looked like a giant fist coming toward me...

...and the pileus "cap clouds" make it even more interesting.
