Hook, Line and Sinker...

My kids spent the day at Epcot, and they called me up soooo excited that they had taken a cloud photo that would far surpass anything I had seen to date. I was so excited - I couldn't wait to see it!

Boomerang Sky

Boomerangs. Bats. Stealth bombers. Shadow ghost bats, scramble the squadron, maybe they're angels:

Reflection on a Spun Gold Sunset

The bottoms of the clouds looked like they were dipped in gold and hung up to dry, reflecting on their own beauty.

Little Toadstools

Another wispy sky sprouting little  toadstools in the grass, or maybe some reflective pools on the beach with breaking waves behind...

 

Cirrocumulus floccus flinging hair water

These clouds formed a pattern that seemed similar to the water spray off my daughter's hair when she whipped her head back in the pool. Boy does that take me back!

Today is Thanksgiving, and I am thankful for memories like these, and the clouds that evoke them!

Stormy Skies, Striking Contrast

The effect of these bright white alto cumulus clouds  against an ominous grey backdrop of storm clouds was really striking! If you look closely you can see the precipitation in the background.

My friends know that I'm crazy about birds - in fact I see them even when they're not really there! This is a true example of my tendency for aviary hallucinations.

Popeye in Victory!

These cumulus clouds against a cirrostratus background took me back to my cartoon childhood - Popeye raising his arms in victory! Thank heaven for spinach!

Cumulus Cloud Sneaker Races

This weather is quite unusual for November in Florida - there was quite a bit of lightning mixed in with these clouds.


The clouds in the foreground look like a whole bunch of sneakers running in a race...

Violet Virga!

A gorgeous sunset was accented by the violet virga. Virga is the bottom of the cloud that looks like hanging moss. It is actually precipitation that falls from a cloud but evaporates before reaching the ground.

Can you find the sad face?

These amazing cirrus clouds are fun and action filled, beautifully lit by a low sun, but I couldn't help notice a very sad face directly in the middle of the cloudscape!

Silver Sliver

This is my favorite moon - I can just see the wee one sitting on the bottom with a nightcap and a candlestick...

Shirley Temple Sky

The cirrus clouds were really high up and formed curl after curl today - they reminded me of Shirley Temple curls...


Or dollops of cloud icing on a fancy cake!

Cotton Candy Clouds

These beautiful pink clouds hung low in the sky like suspended cotton candy at a celestial circus.

Sunshine Superhero

Backlit by the sun, this muscle-bound superhero comes bounding over the horizon

November 15th - Wispy Ribcage Ghost

All I could see was a wispy ghost of a ribcage - it reminded me of the bones we had to draw in art class.

November 14th - Heron Lift-Off

The way the shadow was cast downward off this cumulonimbus cloud (at least that's my best guess on cloud type) made this cloudscape look like a giant heron lifting off from the shore. The shadow definitely provided an animated quality to the image.

November 13th - Fun Friday!

Today the only clouds to be had were the man-made kind. This contrail looked like fun in the sky!

November 12th - Big Brother is Watching

I looked through the camera lens and there was a giant eye looking back at me - strange being watched by the storm!

November 11th - Double, double, toil and trouble...

The remnants of Ida were still evident in this afternoon's sky! It was stormy and threatening, and the way the sunlight skimmed across the top of this cloud made it look like a caldron of bubbling light.

November 10th - Here Comes Ida!

We probably won't see much severe weather here in Orlando, but the outer bands of any hurricane are easily recognizable. These skies can be truly awesome.

November 9th - Hurricane Rainbow

There is a very unusual late season hurricane Ida in the Gulf Coast which is creating some unusual weather here in the outer bands...



I think this upper level rainbow was from light refracted in ice vapor. It sounds pretty good anyway...

November 8th - Shiitake Sky

This cumulonimbus cloud, dramatically backlit by the sun rolled itself up and over until it resembled a giant Shiitake Mushroom overhead.

November 7th - Surrealistic Sky

This accessory cloud looked surreal as it floated in front of the cumulonimbus and cirrus cloudscape.

November 6th - Sky Hook

When I was growing up my Dad used to talk about sky hooks and I never had a clue what he was talking about...do you think this is what he meant?

November 5th - Giant Thumbprint in the Sky

The base ridge of cumulus clouds cast a crown shaped shadow on the layer of Cirrocumulus floccus clouds above it - way cool!

The whole thing looks like a giant thumbprint in the sky!

November 4th - Big Big Sky

Today was one of those days when the sky was really big with every kind of cloud imaginable!


I love it when those high cirrus clouds make a wave-like background for all the fluffy cumulus clouds.

November 3rd - Genie from the Lamp

November 2nd - Splash!

The sky looked like a huge rock was being dropped into the sky making a big splash!

November 1st - Bite Out of the Sky

It looks like a giant left a big bite mark in the sky!


Lately I keep feeling like I'm just going to be sucked up into the sky! Maybe that means I've been doing this too much... I do really love it when the clouds seem to spiral from one level and type to another all the way to heaven, and I must admit I think it would be fun to fly up through that spiral!
